Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will publish Grasshopper Manufacture's upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game Lollipop Chainsaw in the U.S. and Europe, it said on Monday.
The development studio led by Goichi "Suda 51" Suda is known for its off-the-wall, style-over-substance action games like Killer7 and No More Heroes.
Cult film director and writer James Gunn, of Tromeo and Juliet and Slither infamy, is writing the story and characters.
Lollipop Chainsaw follows Juliet Starling, a high school cheerleader who must use her trusty chainsaw and cheerleading moves to carve through hordes of shambling zombies. In true Suda fashion, the game features a cartoony art style as well as other stylish flourishes such as pink hearts that emerge from Juliet's chainsaw as she hacks through the undead. Also, she has a disembodied head attached to her chainsaw like a keychain.
Grasshopper's most recent game, Shadows of the Damned, a joint effort between Suda51 and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, was published by Electronic Arts. However, the game bombed at retail, selling a depressing 24,000 copies in its first month. Perhaps Warner Bros. will do a better job at selling Suda's style.
