Trailer: True Blood Star Plays Superhero Schlub in Griff the Invisible

It’s a tale as old as the Golden Age: Average (possibly delusional) schlub dreams of being a superhero, attempts to fight crime and defend honors, gets a girl and eventually grows up. Or something.

That seems to be the idea behind Griff the Invisible, at least based on this trailer. The Australian superhero flick, starring True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten, is definitely travelling in well-worn territory, but it looks sweet all the same.

Like Kick-Ass and Super before it, the film follows an odd loser who thinks he’s a hero. When Griff (played by Kwanten) meets a cute girl named Melody (Maeve Dermody), he learns that maybe, just maybe, the greatest superpower is love (not making that up — it’s the tagline from the film).

Unlike those other postmodern superhero flicks, Griff seems to focus more on the romance than the action. And frankly, it would all seem trite if it didn’t look so damn charming (blame Kwanten’s earnest eyebrows).

Only time will tell if U.S. audiences can think of Kwanten as anything other than True Blood‘s dumb-but-loveable sex-thing Jason Stackhouse, but between this and the forthcoming Knights of Badassdom he’s got a shot at some serious geek cred.

Griff the Invisible hits select theaters Aug. 19.
