The Science Community Evolves: Welcome Scientific American Blogs

I'm thrilled to share the news that another exciting network launches today: Scientific American blogs is now live with 39 new blogs and 60 bloggers. It's a great community with many old friends and some brand new contributors!

Once upon a time... Back when I began blogging in 2006, the science blogosphere looked a lot different. There were a handful of recognizable contributors that communicated regularly. Most of us were on ScienceBlogs and occasionally we'd all get together and hang out in the same city. The community was that small.

Then something happened.

More people started blogging: Science journalists wrote about science online. Scientists became more comfortable expressing their thoughts and opinions on the Internet. Science enthusiasts joined in. And suddenly, quite miraculously, this simple, cathartic hobby became something bigger. It became a conversation!

Wired and Discover magazine launched networks. Scientopia emerged. And PLoS blogs. And on and on. Soon there were more bloggers than anyone could keep track of. But it meant the discussion was growing and demonstrated the way new media is changing the way we talk about and 'do' science. And that's a good thing.

So I'm thrilled to share the news that another exciting network launches today: Scientific American blogs is now live with 39 new blogsand 60 bloggers. It's a great community with many old friends and some brand new contributors. Go take a look and see what you think!
