Upcoming sci-fi flick The Darkest Hour builds the case for its alien-invasion premise by proffering YouTube videos documenting actual instances of "ball lightning."

The Darkest Hour, produced by Russian auteur Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted), concerns a band of young Americans who get stuck in Moscow when the city is attacked by extraterrestrials.
The 3-D end-of-the-world scenario marks the second feature from director Chris Gorak. A former production designer, Gorak made his debut with 2006 thriller Right at Your Door, which pictured what would happen if the city of Los Angeles were taken over by toxic fumes.
The Darkest Hour, starring Emile Hirsche, opens Dec. 23.
