Classic environmentally themed cartoon Captain Planet is being made into a movie, under the gaze of Transformers producer Don Murphy.
Cartoon Network has signed a deal with Murphy to develop a live-action movie based on the '90s cartoon superhero and his team of five "planeteers."
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, each planeteer controls a different aspect of nature (Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart!) that they use to fight polluters, but they can combine their powers to summon the all-powerful Captain Planet – proving that a team is greater than the sum of its parts.
The show ran for three seasons between 1990 and 1992, and a sequel series – The New Adventures of Captain Planet – added another three. There was a toy line, a short-run comics series and five different videogames.
"The messages of Captain Planet are even more relevant today," Stuart Snyder, president of Turner Broadcasting System's Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media division, told The Hollywood Reporter. "We feel this team can bring the world's first eco-hero to life in a powerful motion picture that is not only pertinent but entertaining."

We expect to make a spectacular series of films with the amazing team at Cartoon Network. With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender."
