1. What’s it about?
The Cars of Radiator Springs are back again in this sequel to the 2006 film. This year is Pixar's 25th anniversary and the story in Cars 2 is as sweeping as the company's history. Where the first film was heavy on life lessons, the sequel is a take on Hollywood spy films and it makes for a big adventure. Lightning McQueen still picks up some wisdom along the way, but the star of this movie is Mater. It's an enjoyable romp and many kids will likely enjoy it more than the first.
2. Can I arrive a little late?
No! In addition to a few good previews, you definitely want to be in your seat for the short film that precedes the movie. "Hawaiian Vacation" is a wonderfully humorous cartoon that features the Toy Story cast. It produced several laugh out loud moments in our theater and was very enjoyable.
3. Will my kids like it?
Are you kidding? Not only will they love it, they'll be begging for the toys and quoting the cars all summer long. Plus, with kid-favorite, Mater, in the spotlight, count on pleas to see the movie again and again. Git-r-done.
4. Will I like it?
Absolutely. The best parts about Pixar movies are the little asides, jokes and details and Cars 2 is loaded with them. There are so many quips and visual gags, I'm looking forward to a second viewing so I can pick up on the ones I missed the first time. If you are an automobile or motorsport fan, there are lots of tidbits that will grab your attention and make you laugh. Pixar does animated movies better than anyone else and Cars 2 is no exception. Plus, the animation is more complex with lush colors and plenty of detailed backgrounds. It's truly a feast for the eyes.
5. Is it worth seeing in 3D?
Not really. There were a few moments where there was an effect that was blatantly 3D, but for the most part there wasn't much that felt like it really enhanced the viewing experience.
6. What is it rated?
G.
7. Any good previews?
Yes, and they were (mostly) exciting and had me geared up and ready to see these movies. There was the first non-spoof trailer for The Muppets, a long preview of the upcoming (and unimpressive) 3D conversion of The Lion King, and a very first look at Pixar's next film, Brave, which arrives next summer and looks very promising.
8. When’s a good time to head to the bathroom?
There are three races in Cars 2. As it turns out, the best time to leave the theater is at the moment the cars arrive at the location of each race, although the first and second arrivals (Tokyo, 30 min into the movie, and Porta Corso, about 55 minutes in) are better than the third arrival (London, 90 minute mark), when you might miss more story. All told, with previews and the Toy Story short, you'll be in the theater for a little over 2 hours.
9. Should I stay for the credits?
Yes. There's a fun little sequence at the beginning of the credits. After that, there is some very attractive artwork surrounding the remaining credits, but not any outtakes or anything you'll miss out on if you head for the door.
10. Is it true that F1 driver Lewis Hamilton has a role in the film?
Yes. And the amazing thing is that he doesn't wreck any other cars with his overly aggressive and impetuous style of driving.
