Listen to the opening bars of the Star Wars theme in your head.

Can you see the little words drifting up the screen? Can you hum it? Are you feeling happy now? Music is closely connected to our emotions. Listening to the theme song of your favorite movie or TV show can bring back the emotions of the world and characters you fell in love with.

Buying sound tracks is one way to keep yourself in your favorite mind-set. But playing the music is even better. Did you take a few years of piano lessons growing up? Perhaps partook in the school marching band? There is sheet music available for your favorite shows. It’s worth it to spend a few minutes a day working on a piece that keeps the obsession alive. Brush up on that skill your fingers still remember.

Sheet Music Plus and Music Notes are two legitimate vendors of music sold by the production companies. The composers will get paid for each dollar you spend. That’s a great way to say ‘thank you’ to the talented musicians who are often overlooked in the TV and movie industry (except for John Williams- we all know him.)

But many TV shows don’t have their music available. Luckily there are fans that spend their time transcribing music to the most obscure songs. These are free or the musicians ask for a donation. This keeps it legal and fun to share their talent with people just as obsessed as they are. The best way to find a song is to type “Game of Thrones sheet music” in Google (insert your favorite show’s title.)

I remember my daughter learning a song on piano from the anime Bleach. It was during one summer when the whole family was taken with the show. She has since given up the piano for drums, but she will still play that song from time to time, and say, “Remember that scene in Bleach where…?”

My nephew recently gave me the piano music for the theme to Game of Thrones. He plays cello, and we’re both obsessed with the show. The first time I haltingly played through the piece, I got so excited. Making music is powerful. I’ve spent the past week working on it and it’s coming along nicely. My nephew plays the lead on cello, and we both get really, really loud as the song goes on, feeling the emotions of all the characters, visualizing the world in our heads as the melody blossoms from our fingertips. We plan to keep the excitement alive by playing that wonderful music together all summer. Or at least until the next season starts.
