This week's Friday Field Photo is from the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. These cross-bedded sandstones (actually, I think they are technically quartzites as a result of low-grade metamorphism) are part of the Cape Supergroup and Ordovician in age (448-443 million years ago). In this photo I like how the rocks have been sculpted into these three-dimensional forms -- you can walk around them and see the stratification in all its glory.
If you ever find yourself in the beautiful city of Cape Town, make sure to take a day and hike up to the top for some spectacular views.
Happy Friday!
