The Oscar-winning documentarian behind The Fog of War and A Brief History of Time next trains his auteur eye on a surreal world of sex, fame and manacled Mormons.

Opening July 15 after an acclaimed 2010 festival run, Errol Morris' Tabloid chronicles the madcap tale of former Miss Wyoming Joyce McKinney, whose 168 IQ didn't stop her from spiraling into a sensational labyrinth of sexual obsession, cloned canines, jail time and other salacious hilarity.

"It really is my best film," said the iconoclastic director on his brain-teasing Twitter page.

That's saying something. From 1978's pet cemetery classic Gates of Heaven – which legendarily forced director Werner Herzog to eat his shoe – to 2008's Abu Ghraib interrogation Standard Operating Procedure, the 63-year-old Morris' decorated career has redefined documentary cinema as we know it.

Judging by Tabloid's lighthearted trailer, which premiered Thursday on Apple and YouTube, Morris might have made not just his best film ever, but also his funniest. But can Tabloid rival the quirky pathos of Fast, Cheap & Out of Control? Can the ebullient McKinney hold a candle to the eccentrics of Vernon, Florida?
