Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Trailer: This Time It's Official

Sony yanked the red-band trailer for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo that popped up Saturday on YouTube after playing in European theaters, then pulled another near-identical clip that followed a few days later. The studio finally released the “official” trailer via satellite Thursday.

The clip, embedded above, covers the same turf as the earlier videos — frosty landscape, quick shots of rebel hacker Lisbeth Salander (played by Rooney Mara) and glimpses of journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), all underscored by a spooky remix of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” — but with sharper resolution and crisper audio.

Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s novel, upon which the movie is based, grounded its gruesome violence in a vast criminal conspiracy investigated by its two heroes. At this point, the case of the supposedly leaked trailers might inspire conspiracy theorists to raise questions of their own: Did Sony marketing mavens play Jedi mind games with fanboys by planting two supposedly pirated trailers in order to stoke interest in the film?

In reply to Wired.com’s e-mailed questions, Sony reps issued a brief release announcing the teaser’s “worldwide debut.”

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, an English-language remake of the 2009 Swedish film of the same name, opens in December.
