When Convergence launched, I explained that this forum will explore unexpected relationships between various disciplines and society. In multiple ways the June 2nd BLUEMind summit (scroll down the link for details) is the embodiment of this notion. It's a two-day event that I'm participating in at the California Academy of Sciences kicking off World Oceans Week 2011. The summit was organized by ocean superhero Wallace J. Nichols and is both a scientific exploration, as well as a celebration of the emergence of neuroscience as a tool as it relates to the ocean biosphere. (The draft agenda is HERE)
My session is entitled "Why is the ocean sexy?" and considers our universal curiosity about life under the sea, individual surfing addiction, our association of the coast with romance, and more. Participants range from legendary ocean explorer Sylvia Earle to ocean advocate Fabian Cousteau to NYU neuroscientist David Poeppel (who features prominently in my most recent book) to my former ScienceBlogs colleague Shelley Batts.
I'm excited to be involved in such a unique conversation that may change the way we think about the relationship between oceans and the human experience. The summit will be live-streamed and archived and you can read more about it at MindandOcean.org
