Saturday the 21st was the first ever Internet Prom. Considering it was put together by a teen I know, spread around, and eventually over a hundred people "attended", I'm impressed. I also predict it will become an annual web event, growing bigger each year. Why? Because there are many, many people who feel closer to their internet friends than the ones in real life. The internet is a way to keep in touch with people who are far away. The internet is the fastest growing social "place." The internet prom is a great idea, but what exactly was it?
First, to attend the prom you had to make a video asking someone to the prom. Then they had to reply. A big thankyou to Ax who replied to my geekmom post figuring out the numerical message my husband gave me (it wasn't just to be silly, it was a math problem...geez. Takes a geekguy to translate a geekguy.) There was no need to have a date to attend the prom, you could just make a video stating how you were going to celebrate. Then you and your date were supposed to make a video of you dancing (to music with permission) and upload the video on the comment section of one of the video prom YouTube posts. Finally, on the date of the prom, there was a live concert online that attendees could dance to, with their date also dancing somewhere in the internet world. Everyone could watch those previously uploaded videos of dancing to be amused. And there was a girl-Skype sleepover chat.
My daughter and I attended. I asked her dad, she asked a manga character. We were both confused. The above paragraph is from finally reading all the random pages and posts about the prom-after it already happened. We didn't understand the "previously uploaded video" part. So the night of the internet prom, we all got dressed...and then realized we were supposed to have already made dancing videos. Oops. I quickly taped my daughter dancing with a book, and then she made a quick edit to post it online.

I decided I didn't want to bother editing videos during the prom, so my husband and I just danced around while my daughter held the camera and laughed at us. "You guys are such nerds." The next day, I put it together to make a video of our experience:

Watching some of the other prom videos, a few stood out as very cute. This one is of Amanda, the girl who started it all:

Here's a girl who went on her own:

And two cute kids dancing "together"

See you next year?
