The trailer, narrated by Geoffrey Rush (who provides the voice of beaked Green Lantern Tomar-Re in the movie), gives a solid primer on nearly everything audiences will need to know about the Green Lantern Corps, their home base of Oa and the yellow fear monster Parallax.
Granted, this clip isn’t actually in 3-D (neither Wired.com nor Warner Bros. can hand you glasses through your screen), but it does offer an idea of what the final product will look like in the multiplex. Honestly, the cosmic story based on the DC Comics series looks pretty cool. The scenes on Oa have a rushing, swooping quality that could translate well in 3-D.
That said, aside from the fair amount of time the new trailer devotes to star Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, it gives very little time to earthly characters. Hal’s love interest Carol Ferris (played by Blake Lively) and supervillain Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) get about three seconds total in the trailer.
Considering the transformation that we’ve seen Hammond undergo in previous trailers, maybe its just not something anyone wants to imagine in 3-D, but Lively? If Maxim is to be believed, she looks good from any angle and in all dimensions. And it’s not like anyone is worried about what Reynolds will look like flying out of the screen.
Will special effects outweigh actors in Green Lantern? We’ll have to wait and see.
Green Lantern hits theaters in both 2-D and triple-Ds June 17.
