Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a HUGE fan of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars". While there are many arguments about the politics of this show, I can't help but enjoy the dancing, the music and the incredible costumes. The costumes are custom made every...single...week -- invoking the spirit of that week's dance, the music used in the dance, and the personalities of the dancers.
On Monday night's "Dancing" a traditional 46-piece classical orchestra was brought in with guest performances by two young classical breakout stars: violinist David Garrett and mezzosoprano Katherine Jenkins. Most of the dances were performed to more "old school" musical pieces, such as Puccini, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven.
One of this season's youngest contestants, Disney actress Chelsea Kane, performed a delightful Viennese waltz with professional dancer Mark Ballas to John Williams' original theme (titled Hedwig's Theme) from the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The orchestra performed the piece spot-on, the waltz was whimsical and beautiful, and the costumes paid homage to the old-meets-new world of Harry Potter.
Watch the video for a better view of Chelsea's black dress that reminded me of the Harry Potter films' renderings of Bellatrix Lestrange, and Mark's wizard hat and timepiece prints on his purple vest.
Chelsea and Mark's dance scores propelled them to the top of the leaderboard, their first lead this season! Congratulations!
