As DNA Day approaches, personal genomics company 23andMe is testing out yet another pricing model for their genome scan. For today only their kits cost $0 up-front, but there's an obligatory $9/month subscription fee for the first 12 months. That subscription fee is pretty steep, but overall this means a kit effectively sets you back US$108 - a good deal.
Unfortunately, non-US customers will need to brace themselves for some additional costs: international shipping costs $62.95 for the first kit and $39 for each subsequent kit in the same order (so banding together with friends/family to order multiple kits can spread the load).
This is for 23andMe's complete package, so you get genotypes for around a million markers, as well as risk prediction for common complex diseases like type 2 diabetes, carrier status for several severe recessive diseases like cystic fibrosis, and information for ancestry and genealogy analysis.
