Melancholia, the upcoming sci-fi-tinged disaster film from Lars von Trier, looks just as beautiful as the Danish director's bizarre 2009 experiment in horror, Antichrist.
In the NSFW trailer above, the familiar anxieties and family feuds surrounding a wedding get an emotional boost thanks to a planet's possible collision with Earth. Somewhere along the way, weird weather adds to the turmoil and the bride (played by Spider-Man's former cinematic squeeze, Kirsten Dunst) appears to wind up lying nude under a night sky.
With a strong cast – including Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt – and von Trier's obvious command of the filmmaking process, this could be one big bummer of an apocalyptic movie. Whether it will avoid Antichrist's shocking leap into the ludicrous zone remains to be seen.
Melancholia opens in May in Denmark.
