Square Enix will release its classic Parasite Eve games on PlayStation Network in the runup to the release of The 3rd Birthday, it said Tuesday. The classic PlayStation games will be playable on PlayStation 3 and PSP.

Originally released in 1998, Parasite Eve was the first major role-playing game that Square Enix released in the wake of Final Fantasy VII's breakout success. Based on a Japanese science fiction novel, it featured a surprisingly realistic, grown-up story. (Square Enix still has the game's original 1998-vintage website online.) It is available now.

The 1999 sequel, which will come to PlayStation Network later this month, was more of an action-oriented survival horror game. Both classics will retail for $6.

The 3rd Birthday, an over-the-shoulder shooter game that continues the story of Parasite Eve protagonist Aya Brea, will be released in the U.S. on March 29.

The original version of this article misstated the price of the downloadable game, based on incorrect information from Square Enix. Parasite Eve costs $6.
