Mega Man Universe, the online, user-generated action game in development at Capcom, is no more.

The publisher said Thursday that it has canceled the production of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 downloadable game, which it had originally intended to release in the spring of this year. Shown in playable form at Tokyo Game Show 2010, Universe was to allow players to create and share their own Mega Man levels and characters.

Capcom broke the news via a stereotypically vague Japanese press release. Daniel Feit put it best: The statement "cited 'various reasons' but offers none."

Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune abruptly quit Capcom after Tokyo Game Show. While Capcom has not explicitly drawn any connections between these two events, it is hard to imagine them being unrelated.
