'You Won't Be Able to Breathe' During Sanctum, James Cameron Promises

Sanctum, the new 3-D thriller that plunges a group of cave divers into a nightmarish underwater flood, will be a “very, very intense experience,” executive producer James Cameron promises.

“You won’t be able to breathe for the last hour of the movie,” Cameron said Thursday during an underwater live chat conducted at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California.

The movie, inspired by co-writer Andrew Wight’s near-death experience, follows a small group of cave divers trapped underground after a freak storm. “It’s about all the challenges that they face,” Cameron said, “and how it sorta tears them apart psychologically and, you know, physically, how they have to deal with this intense survival situation.”

The R-rated Sanctum, directed by Alister Grierson and filmed in 3-D using technology developed by Cameron for Avatar, opens Friday.
