Warren Ellis and Steve Pugh's Hotwire: Deep Cut goes into speculative and sensory overload in its conclusive third issue, out Wednesday.
The latest miniseries in the Hotwire supernatural tech-noir franchise, Deep Cut finds pixielike exorcist detective Alice Hotwire caught in an apocalyptic crossfire between future-mercs gone wild and a phantom soldier in search of redemption. The hyperactive narrative and hypnotic visuals make for a riveting comics showdown.
Although the impressive Hotwire was created by Pugh and Ellis, Pugh mostly helms the whole outer-limits haul. It's a challenging read, thanks to the striking detail of every image and the cerebral concept of a conflict-wracked technopolis where the dead and living jostle for space and power.
But it's rewarding once you let the dense data sink in. Hotwire is one of the best titles from Radical Publishing, a visually ambitious comics upstart that's redefining the phrase "graphic novel" with every release. Once its narrative ambition catches up to its artwork, watch out.
