Sparkfun Free Day

Last year Sparkfun Electronics gave away $100,000 in free merchandise through a self-inflicted Denial Of Service attack called Free Day. If you don't remember how it went, check out GeekDad Anton Olsen's recap of last years event.

This year they are doing it bigger and better!__ January 13th 2011 at 9:00 AM MST Sparkfun is kicking off Free Day 2011__. The goal this year is to give away $150,000 in free merchandise educate new users about electronics, and try to raise $30,000 for charity. All the while playing "Keep the Servers up" a favorite game of System admins worldwide (Hey that would be a cool game — Steve Jackson Games, I'm looking at you guys) ! This year the rules are different than last year's mad rush to the checkout. Here is a brief summary:

  1. If you're a customer of Sparkfun you can claim a $10.00 credit for every year since your first order as long as they still have money to give. For example if you orderd something from Sparkfun January 2nd 2010 you get $10.00 ... or you can go for what's behind door #2
  2. Door #2 if you're a new user you can take a quiz about basic electronics and get $10.00 for each correct answer. You also lose $3.00 for each incorrect answer and get nothing if you skip a question. Check out their Tutorials for an idea of what's on the quiz. Existing users can forego the $10 a year credit and take the quiz. If they run out of money before you complete the quiz you get nothing. Choose wisely.
  3. Sparkfun is also donating $2.00 for every correct answer to three charities The Gathering Place, The Hunger Project and The X-Prize.

More details can be found at The Free Day 2011 Page.

A company rewarding loyal customers, educating people about electronics, giving away merchandise and raising money for charity. You don't see that every day but you will tomorrow. Be there!
