The Nintendo DS is now the best-selling game system in U.S. history, Nintendo said Tuesday.
Americans have purchased 47 million DS units through the end of December 2010, according to Nintendo's internal sales figues. This number includes all four versions of the hardware -- the original DS launched in 2004, the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL. The company will launch its next-generation portable, the Nintendo 3DS, in the United States in March.
The only game system to have come close to this sales number is the PlayStation 2. Sony sold 50 million PlayStation 2 systems in North America. (That's all of North America, including Canada and Mexico, so Sony's number doesn't necessarily contradict Nintendo's claim.)
Nintendo also said it has sold 34 million Wii units since the console's launch in November 2006.
