“We spit-balled this ridiculous idea, and then like seven, eight years later we shot it,” Pegg and Frost explained in a goofy back-and-forth with Wired.com, viewable above.
Judging by that backstory, and the Paul trailer below, the comedy won’t hew too closely to the gory hilarity of Pegg and Frost’s zombie spoof, Shaun of the Dead. But the movie does boast the mallrat-friendly Green Hornet Seth Rogen as the film’s frat-boyish alien Paul, a casting choice made by Universal after Frost and Pegg asked for a cranky old man like Rip Torn.
“Seth’s young, he’s very popular, very hot right now,” Pegg said. “But he also has the voice of an old man.”
Can Paul carve out a niche in the strangely skinny alien-spoof genre, which is still accidentally lorded over by John Travolta’s Scientology-fi tragicomedy Battlefield Earth? Screen the reels and let us know your interstellar verdict in the comments section below.
