Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti was a fiercely musical and political virtuoso whose mind-boggling output was as influential as it was controversial. You can sample that productivity by scoring a six-album vinyl reissue box set, curated by The Roots' well-traveled drummer Questlove.
The Fela Kuti compilation – which hits stores Tuesday and includes Everything Scatter, Expensive Shit, Fear Not for Man, Sorrow Tears and Blood, Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense and Beasts of No Nation, viewable in the gallery above – marks the first time some of the albums have been available domestically on vinyl.
It's also the first of many curated vinyl boxes to come, thanks to The Knitting Factory Records' massive reissue campaign that began last year.
Fela Kuti was the real deal when it came to kinetic jazz and funk mixed with resolute activism. Screen the video below to watch Questlove testify to Fela's talent and influence, then drop your own testimonial in the comments section below. The most compelling entry scores the free box set. Contest ends 12:01 a.m. Pacific on Feb. 4, 2011. Contest limited to U.S. residents.
