SoundWorks Collection Digs Into Tron: Legacy's Audio Design

When the ladies and gentlemen of Tron: Legacy start their engines, the roar of Light Cycles defines the action like a whining melody set against Daft Punk’s churning score. This teaser trailer offers a sneak peek at the upcoming SoundWorks Collection video that will delve into the Tron sequel’s audio design.

How exactly did filmmakers crank up the urgency for Sam Flynn’s sleek ride? SoundWorks Collection, which creates interesting videos that dig into movie audio, checked in with Tron: Legacy sound designer Steve Boeddeker for the back story, which will be unveiled Monday on the SoundWorks site.

In the video teaser above, Boeddeker describes his inspiration for the Tron sequel trailer that famously wowed geeks when it bowed at Comic-Con International in San Diego. SoundWorks’ upcoming full-length video reveals why Boedekker favored real-world motorcycle sounds over digital trickery to give the light cycles their oomph, while other audio wizards describe how they made human voices sound more, or less, robotic.

Tron: Legacy opens Dec. 17.
