When most people think of December they think of the holiday season. Earth and planetary scientists, however, think of the gathering of the year -- the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco. The AGU Fall Meeting is gigantic. I don't know the exact numbers, but something like 30,000 Earth scientists congregate for a week every December to share the latest results on everything from the core of the Earth to planetary bodies outside the solar system, and everything in between. Every sphere is represented -- litho, hydro, cryo, bio, atmo, magneto, iono, and more! It's marvelous.
A handful of big news stories will come out of the AGU meeting -- usually something climate-related these days -- that will be written/blogged about by everyone and their brother. Those stories will be easy to keep track of. But, the other >99% of the science will go largely unnoticed unless you attend the meeting or keep track of those blogging and/or tweeting (#AGU10). So, if you are into this stuff, bookmark those blogs and put #AGU10 in your saved searches on Twitter. This will be the first of (hopefully) many posts from me over the next couple of weeks (the technical program is Dec 13-17).
Below is a (very long) list of technical sessions I want to check out this year. I'm interested in how the processes and patterns on the Earth's surface are preserved in the geologic record, so the majority of what I list below falls into that theme. There is a lot of geomorphology and sedimentary stuff in here with some tectonics thrown in for good measure. I've organized it by day and by oral or poster session. This is a bit of a 'wish list' because there's no way I'll be able to attend all of this.
