As I’ve mentioned before, the book Cooking for Geeks has a lot of ideas for anyone who’d like to try some “kitchen science” experiments with their kids. One experiment I plan to do is the Supertaster Test. Knowing whether you or your kids are extra-sensitive to certain chemical compounds is more than just a piece of trivia. It could explain why some kids are picky eaters while others are happy to try anything you put in front of them.
Definitely a Supertaster Image: Cooking for Geeks
According to author Jeff Potter, you can order Supertaster test strips in small quantities or in bulk. But Oprah’s Dr. Oz says you can also try the Supertaster Test using just Sweet N Low dissolved in water. Or, as Potter describes in the book, you can also check how many taste buds you have (one indication of supertaster powers) with a little blue food coloring.
If all this sounds like fun to you, be sure to enter to win one of five copies of Cooking for Geeks, autographed by author Jeff Potter. Just fill out the form below by the deadline of 11:59 pm Thursday, December 30, 2010. Winners will be chosen at random.
