As a kid, I was a huge fan of cheesy detective shows: "Magnum P.I.," "Simon and Simon" and particularly the uber-goofy "Riptide," a.k.a. "Magnum P.I. on a Boat with a Geeky Guy Thrown in for Good Measure and Possibly to Make Other Two Stars Look Hunkier." But despite countless hours frittered away in front of these shows, I somehow managed to forget "Riptide's" theme song. I tried and tried, but all I could come up with was the groovy guitar of "Simon and Simon."
When you're a geek, this kind of thing can drive you crazy. You don't just shrug and say, "Hmmm, don't remember. Oh well." You obsess over it until it's solved, no matter how pointless or futile. And futile it was: There just aren't a lot of people who remember "Riptide," let alone the theme song.
Thank goodness my 10-year-old told me about Television Tunes, where you'll find recordings of the theme songs of shows from the A-Teamto Zooboomafoo. Obsess no more, GeekMoms. Your obscure childhood time-wasters await.
