Allen Mezquida's toon protagonist Smigly can't clear space in his head due to social networking overload in the animated video short "Noise."
"I'm finding the creative part of my brain being dominated with social media chatter," Mezquida told Wired.com in an e-mail interview. The waking life and chaotic dreams of Mezquida's Everyman avatar, Smigly, are infested with Facebook "Like" icons, Apple ads, YouTube logos and other iconography from our virtual second lives.
"The quiet contemplation I need to cultivate original ideas is being carpet-bombed relentlessly by the digital noise," said Mezquida. "For all the amazing gains of this new media, I wanted to draw a little attention to the possible loss that we're all experiencing. I didn't know if I was alone here or if other people could relate."
