Trailer: Game of Thrones Treads On Lord of the Rings Turf

Hollywood writer David Benioff, who worked at epic scale when he crafted ancient warfare saga Troy, is bringing a similarly sprawling story to the small screen in Game of Thrones.

The series, which Benioff is executive-producing for HBO, is steeped in medieval history and should hit the sweet spot for Lord of the Rings -style fantasy buffs, judging from the sword-and-sorcery action unveiled in the new trailer above.

Filming through December in Northern Ireland, the miniseries is based on George R.R. Martin‘s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels about the mythic kingdom of Westeros. There, seasons last decades and supernatural forces imperil the citizenry as sword-slinging nobles, warriors and scoundrels vie to take charge of the Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones, co-created by D.B. Weiss, debuts next spring on HBO, with a 15-minute “making of” special slated to air Sunday prior to the network’s Boardwalk Empire season finale.
