I am pretty sure Tom is correct, but I don't have the manual that goes with this. The basic idea is that you put some radioactive source at different locations on the board. On the left end his a holder for a Geiger counter or something. So, you can measure the detected levels of radiation as a function of distance.
But wait, there is more. If you order now, it will include this set of shields.
Included in the set are cardboard, aluminum and lead shields. With this you can measure the detected radiation as a function of the type and number of plates (and with distance).
I have no idea where the sources for this thing are. Likely gone. This would be a cool lab for students though (but I think only one of my ancient Geiger counters is functioning).
