According to the New York street artists of TrustoCorp, girls are not made of sugar, spice and everything nice. In fact, the 100% American Female image above indicates a far more sinister genetic makeup.
You can find out more when TrustoCorp stages a hit-and-run West Coast exhibition this weekend complete with paintings, sculpture and carnival games. The New Americana pop-up show arrives at Los Angeles' Gallery 1988 Saturday night, stays Sunday afternoon, then vanishes into thin air.
Like painter Ron English, who's churned out dozens of fiendish variations on the Ronald McDonald mascot, TrustoCorp uses 21st-century brand-name iconography as raw material for its art.
The group has also planted dozens of fake traffic signs in San Francisco; Detroit; Houston; Miami; Austin, Texas; and Brooklyn, New York. Mimicking conventional "No Parking" graphics, TrustoCorp's illegal postings bear slogans like "Real Men Use Fists," "Broke Is the New Black" and "Drop Out Zone."
New Americana runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Gallery 1988, 7020 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles.
