The second installment in the Starcraft II trilogy could arrive sometime around April 2012, according to Battle.net project director Greg Canessa.

During a presentation at GDC Online in Austin, Texas on Thursday, Canessa said that future Battle.net features like replay exchange and profile upgrades would be a main area of focus "over the next 18 months between now and Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm," Gamespot reported.

During development for Starcraft II, Blizzard decided to split the single-player campaign into three games, each focusing on a different race. Wings of Liberty, which was released in July, stars the rebel Jim Raynor and his Terran group of raiders as they fight against the Confederate government.

Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm will revolve around Kerrigan and her horde of Zerg as they... well, we're not sure. Kerrigan's fate was left ambiguous at the end of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, and Blizzard hasn't been very forthcoming with details.

The third entry, Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, will feature the enigmatic Protoss and conclude the series' story.

Despite the eventual sequels, current players can rest assured that Blizzard is still focusing on Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty. In a recent blog post, lead designer Dustin Browder unveiled some of the changes planned for the game's next patch, which include an increase for the Zerg roach's range and a delay on the availability of the Terran reaper's speed upgrade. If the company's previous games are any indication, we can expect plenty more patches for the first Starcraft II before we even get close to seeing the next one.
