Porsche plans to introduce a hybrid version of every model in its lineup -- including, apparently, the venerable 911.
The radical move comes as the European Union tightens emissions regulations, requiring Porsche to cut its average CO2 emissions from 255 grams per kilometer to 216 within five years. The automaker believes hybrid drivetrains will help meet that target, according to Automotive News Europe.
Porsche's already rolled out a hybrid Cayenne and will use essentially the same hardware in a hybrid Panamera next year. Then comes the incredible 918 plug-in hybrid supercar. With price tag approaching seven figures, the 918 will be little more than a technology showcase built in very limited numbers.
“We want to learn how we can electrify all our sports cars in the future with the help of this short production run," Porsche engine chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser told ANE. As for gas-electric versions of the Boxer, Cayman and 911, Neusser wouldn't provide a timeline. But the 911 GT3 R hybrid (pictured) already is competing. It can't be that big of a jump from track to street.
Porsche also will explore using turbocharged four-cylinder engines and cutting vehicle weight to further improve efficiency, according to ANE.
