The PlayStation Phone, rumored so much that it is almost a dead certainty, might look just like this.

Tech blog Engadget published leaked pictures of what it says is a prototype PlayStation phone on Tuesday evening. It is said to feature Sony's classic button scheme as well as a multi-touch sensor and shoulder buttons. It will reportedly run on the Android 3.0 operating system and have access to a custom Sony Marketplace for buying and downloading new games. Engadget says the device boasts 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB of solid-state storage and a four-inch screen.

"We're not saying that (the phone is real) because we want to believe or because we're gingerly trying to nab pageviews," wrote Engadget editor Joseph Topolsky in a follow-up blog post on Wednesday. "We're saying it because we know it to be true. This is a device which has been confirmed through multiple, trusted sources."

The images of Sony's PlayStation Phone are "definitely fake," a spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe told Gamasutra on Wednesday -- before changing its stance to "we do not comment on rumor and speculation."

The company would not comment on other rumors, including anything about the phone's existence. SCEE is a separate division from Sony Ericsson, which is reportedly developing the phone.

Gaming news site NowGamer.com also features an updated version of Sony's response, which also shifted from "definitely fake" to "no comment." The site also reports "telltale signs" that the image is bogus, including an accumulation of dirt around the screen and a reference to A and B buttons on the phone's interface, instead of PlayStation's trademark circle and square buttons.

The PlayStation Phone has been talked about for years, ever since Sony called the prospect "seductive" and "plausible" three years ago. This August, reports came out that the phone would run on Android and feature a slide-out game controller.

We're still skeptical about the veracity of these rumors, but if the Playstation Phone is really coming out soon, it could very well compete with the iPhone's grip on the portable gaming market.
