TOKYO — Superstar lawyer Phoenix Wright and puzzle wrangler Hershel Layton will team up to solve mysteries in Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney for Nintendo 3DS, Level-5 and Capcom announced on Tuesday.

Level-5 didn’t spill many details about the game, but 1UP’s liveblog of its press conference describes the trailer, in which Layton accuses a girl of witchcraft and Wright delivers a passionate objection. As you might expect from both Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton, gameplay will consist of a combination of puzzle-solving and crime mystery goodness.

Capcom’s Shu Takumi will write the scenario. Takumi has served as director and chief storywriter for all five previous Ace Attorney games, as well as upcoming DS game Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.

As a big fan of both puzzle series, I’m very hyped for this game. Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright are the perfect combination, like peanut butter and… a different kind of peanut butter.

Chris says: Holy. Flying. Shelf. This is the best day ever. I can’t remember the last time I got excited for a game like this. And for purely stupid fanboy reasons, like OH MY GOD MAYA AND LUKE CAN BE BEST FRIENDS OMG OMG OMG. I need to go take a few deep breaths.

Also I kind of feel like this is the beginning of the end for both series because they are probably jumping the shark big time, but what the hell, if it’s gonna happen anyway let’s get on that shark and ride it.
