Ahoy mateys! Sunday is “Talk Like A Pirate Day.”  So avast ye and try one o’ the followin’ suggestions in honor o’ the holiday:

  • Change your Facebook language to “Pirate” – Go to the bottom of your Facebook page. On the lower left corner, your default language will be showing in link form. Click on the language. Find “English” and click on it, then select “Pirate” from the drop-down menu.

  • Shanty – Go to Paul and Storm’s site and listen to the song Captain’s Wife’s Lament. The song is one long sexual innuendo (though probably less dirty than the average middle-school lunchroom), so it may not be suitable for younger ears. However, They Might Be Giants have a song about pirate girls (that was made for kids):

  • Watch at least one pirate movie – If you like classics, try Errol Flynn in The Sea Hawk. Cutthroat Island is silly and fun if you want something (vaguely) family friendly and modern (and cheesy).  There’s always the Pirates of the Caribbean movies too.

  • Have a Pirate Party – the internet is full of activities to help you make the most of this holiday.  There is even a full party kit on the Talk Like A Pirate Day website.

  • What be yer pirate name? – Use a pirate name generator to find out! My name is Cap’n Aurora Deadbones.

  • Hang a “Jolly Roger” – These can be found at novelty stores and even on Amazon.

  • Invent pirate phrases and then try them on unsuspecting land-lubbers – Go to a pirate lingo glossary for inspiration, or go to a pirate translation site.

Talk Like A Pirate Day has its own website where you can find how other people are celebrating, how to show your pirate alter-ego through social media, and much more.

Now go climb the ratlines and set the tops’l, ye scurvy dogs!
