Maker Faire is coming to New York in less than two weeks, and GeekMom readers have an amazing chance to get involved. Fiber artist Robyn Love and her posse will attempt to cover one of the rockets at the New York Hall of Science, site of this year's Faire, in a form-fitting afghan made of colorful 12 X 12 inch squares and she needs anyone who can wield a pair of knitting needles or crochet hook to help!

World Maker Faire NY on September 25 and 26 marks the first time Make Magazine will be bringing its wildly popular gathering of tinkerers, craftspeople, science students and teachers and geeks of all kinds to the New York area. This highly family-friendly event (GeekDad has been a participant for the past two years) will feature a life-size version of the board game Mousetrap!, a performance by the musical group ArcAttack!, which uses electrical Tesla coils as instruments, and an attempt to set the world record for walking across a pool filled with oobleck.

Robyn Love's yarnbombing project is sponsored by Lion Brand's Hometown USA yarn, which has embraced this underground movement of knit graffiti artists. Yarn Bombers leave their mark on parking meters and light poles, chain link fences and telephone wires. These urban guerrillas wrap doilies around trees and even cover car antennae in tiny cozies. Their works are one-of-a-kind, and sometimes carry a tag with their street name and URL.

For Maker Faire, Robin is asking folks to knit or crochet a square, or just email her a message to be pinned onto a square. As she writes:

Like a Tibetan prayer flag, your message will be caught by the breezes of Flushing Meadows Corona Park and carried off into the universe.

Email Robyn for instructions, or check her blog for info on upcoming knit nights in Manhattan at which she will provide the yarn. The only catch is that you must use Lion Brand yarn. Hope to see you – or your knitted square – at the Faire!
