TOKYO – Capcom will bring a brand-new action game series called Asura's Wrath to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and it's tough to shake the feeling that it was inspired by Sony's God of War.
Developed by CyberConnect2 (.hack), the game was billed by its director Hiro Shimada as "a completely new style of game" at a preview event held Wednesday night in Tokyo.
"We are continuing this process without being sure ourselves whether it is even a game," Shimada said.
So, what is it? The teaser shown at the press release featured a clash between two demonic beings, including a pulse-pounding finale where the powers of the L and R triggers stop a galactic buddha from poking through the planet.
It was certainly an epic video, but the overall aesthetics and Quick Time Event instantly bring God of War to mind. In fact, Asura's Wrath seems exactly like what would happen if you swappped the Greek setting in Kratos' world with a Buddhist flavor.
However, it may be too early to make assumptions. There is a lot more work to be done on Asura's Wrath, but its developers are wasting no time in hyping up this behemoth.
"I don't usually get such sensations from games," said producer Keiji Inafune, "but seeing this game for the first time gave me goosebumps."
