Torchlight II is coming to PCs in the first part of 2011, Runic Games said Wednesday. The sequel to the indie dungeon-crawler will feature co-op play and include a free matchmaking service to help gamers find online playmates.

In a press release, Runic Games' CEO Max Schaefer assured fans that a planned Torchlight MMO is still in the works. "We are still going to make the MMO," he said, "but it became apparent that Torchlight II was the logical next step for us given the phenomenal enthusiasm of gamers petitioning us for multiplayer."

Torchlight debuted as a bargain-priced download for the PC in October 2009. The game earned favorable reviews and a good many fans thanks to the satisfying way it scratched the Diablo itch.

Runic Games will be showing a pre-alpha build of the game at gamescom in Germany later this month and PAX Prime in Seattle from Sept. 3 to 5.
