The New York Times crossword is no stranger to secret codes, as we proved in last year's Vanish non-alternate reality game on wired.com. This week, for the AMC conspiracy show Rubicon, the Times got noted puzzlemaker Fred Piscop to make a series-themed crossword, which you can solve on AMC's site.
But that wasn't quite the crossword that viewers saw when they tuned in for Sunday's episode. That one was captured by sharp-eyed viewer Doug Orleans of Somerville, Massachusetts. It looked like this:
Times solvers might notice a few differences between that and their beloved crosswords. One- and two-letter words, unchecked letters (including five in the first entry!), non-symmetrical alignment, numbers crazily out of order. And where's the 8?
Of course, maybe it's some sort of secret code....
