In February Symantec conducted an in-depth survey of 2800 children and 7000 adults in 14 countries to try and get a better perspective of what kids are doing online and how aware the parents are. The survey covers Cyber-Bullying, Adult Content, Social Networking, and other areas of online activity.

Some of the information from the report includes:

  • 48% of children world wide think they spend too much time online.
  • 62% of the children surveyed said they have had a negative experience online These range from stranger friending them to strangers trying to get them to meet in real life.
  • 95% reported that they've established rules of conduct for themselves online. This includes no Cyber Bullying and informing a parent if they are being bullied.

The report also has tips from Marian Merritt a parent and internet safety advocate.

Overall the report is an interesting look into what kids are doing online and what parents think is going on. By the way this year parents and kids are finally in sync with how much time kids spend online. The report is available at The Norton Online Family Report Webpage for download in several languages.
