The last-minute Apple rumors are creeping out before this morning's WWDC keynote address by Steve Jobs. This year we have for you some rather convincing photos of a standalone multi-touch trackpad, a truncated, buttonless version of Apple's aluminum Bluetooth keyboard.
The photos, leaked to Engadget, show the trackpad from the top, side and bottom, and are pretty consistent with the existing keyboard's design. You can see the on-off switch mounted on the end of the battery compartment/stand, the little rubber feet on the bottom and, well, that's it. The BT keyboard is minimal enough already. This thing appears to have zero buttons.
A separate multi-touch trackpad would clearly be great for iMac and Mac Pro owners who prefer gestural input to using a mouse. It would also be good for MacBook users who dock their notebooks to a desktop setup. I'd prefer a deeper keyboard with the trackpad front and center when I can reach it while typing, but then I should probably just stick to my MacBook.
I'll bite, and say this is the real deal. But the big question is whether or not the peripheral will be revealed later today in what we expect to be an already busy keynote speech. We'll know soon enough: Stay tuned for our Gadget Lab live-blog of the WWDC event today at 10AM Pacific. More photos below.
