Pythonesque Rock of Ages Smashes the Classics

At first blush, E3 is only ever about sequels and shooters. But there’s always an imaginative oddball game lost within the white noise. This year it was Rock of Ages.

I met with Atlus at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles last week to see the publisher’s upcoming game releases. I’m thrilled about much of what it has to offer, but what really stuck with me was Rock of Ages , an upcoming downloadable game for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The game is the latest from Chilean developer ACE Team, the creator of the 2009 Independent Games Festival finalist Zeno Clash.

Rock of Ages will play like a hybrid of tower defense and Marble Madness. Players will place defensive armaments in the hope of preventing a massive boulder from ramming into their castle. Online players will go head-to-head, attempting to break through their opponent’s defenses while fending off attacks.

The sumptuous look of the game, particularly when the elephants come in to play, reminded me of the look and feel of the ornate Terry Gilliam film The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Have a look at the tantalizing trailer, replete with chanting monks, that I saw behind closed doors at E3 this year to see why I’m so intrigued. Rock of Ages will be released in 2011.
