When Crackdown was released in 2007, part of the game's appeal was that it granted access to the Halo 3 beta test.

Crackdown 2 doesn't come with the same perks, but Microsoft has figured out a couple of ways to make the Xbox 360 game's demo popular. The demo, released Monday, allows players to earn Achievements while they play.

There's a catch. You won't hear the trademark pop of the Achievement or even earn points for your Gamerscore upon accomplishing the ten in-game feats. Instead, the Achievements are bookmarked as earned and rewarded when you pop the Crackdown 2 disc into your Xbox 360 when the game comes out on July 6.

Crackdown 2 is an open-world action game made by Ruffian Games, a studio founded by two former members of Realtime Worlds – the house who made the original Crackdown and moved on to make APB when Microsoft moved too slowly on committing to the sequel.

There's another bit of clever marketing around Crackdown 2 aimed towards gamers stuck behind desks.

Playing the Facebook game Chuck's Ducks 2 unlocks a new difficulty in the Crackdown 2 demo and gives players access to a sticky bomb shaped like a rubber duck.
