It's beginning to seem like there's no videogame that Hollywood won't consider for the big screen.
Reuters reports that Sony Pictures Animation has purchased the rights to RollerCoaster Tycoon from Atari.
RollerCoaster Tycoon, created by Chris Sawyer for MicroProse in 1999, is a simulator that puts players in charge of a theme park. On top of running the day-to-day business of fleecing and entertaining parkgoers, players can also construct elaborate rides then watch their customers try them out.
There's probably a method to Sony's madness.
I'd wager that the studio is eyeballing RollerCoaster Tycoon because of the breakout success of How To Train Your Dragon. The notion of a RollerCoaster Tycoon movie might not seem like a good idea in a strict narrative sense, but a 3-D movie aimed towards kids and crammed with thrilling eye-candy could be a hot ticket.
