Vader ProjectArty variations on Darth Vader's helmeted head have been impaled on pikes in exhibitions worldwide over the past four years. Now, The Vader Project is stormtrooping Los Angeles for a 10-day auction preview before hyperspeeding to Philadelphia for a sell-off.

“It’s time for our child to venture forth into the world,” The Vader Project curators and producers Dov Kelemer and Sarah Jo Marks of DKE Toys said in a press release.

The public has been ogling eye-popping versions of the legendary Sith Lord's visage at international exhibitions ever since The Vader Project's May 2007 launch at the Star Wars Celebration IV event in Los Angeles. Star Wars fans get their last chance to view the Vader heads – designed by 100 cool artists like Peter Kuper, Gary Baseman, Amanda Visell, Tim Biskup and Dalek – starting with a free opening reception June 11 at 6812 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles.

If you dig the exhibition but aren't interested in purchasing a head, pick up a copy of the The Vader Project's limited-edition catalogue in Los Angeles, which shows off the sublime terrors in more than 200 pages of full-color splendor. More than 20 participating artists will be present at the preview to sign autographs.

The auction kicks off with a July 5 viewing in Philadelphia. The sell-off proper commences at Freeman's Auction House on July 10, with most bidding beginning at $1,500 per Vader head. That's a lot less than what Boba Fett got paid to turn Han Solo into carbonite wall candy. But is it too much to pay for a sci-fi and art mashup? Let us know in the comments section below. And may the Force be with your check cards.
