PAX Video: Journalists vs. Developers, the Ultimate Grudge Match

Thanks to the good people at G4, we have high-quality video of the very first panel at PAX East: “Journalists vs. Developers: The Ultimate Grudge Match!”

Having done videogame journalism panels at the previous two Penny Arcade Expo shows in Seattle, I knew I wanted to do something bigger for PAX East. Inspired by the many, varied arguments I’ve had with Harmonix’s John Drake, I thought we might recreate some of that back-and-forth on stage with a candid look at the things that gamemakers and journalists do to tick each other off.

Drake, G4’s Patrick Klepek and Irrational Games director of product development Tim Gerritsen rounded out the panel, and Jeff Green of EA.com served as the moderator/referee. (Drake and I pitched the panel to PAX, but handed the whole thing off to Green so we didn’t have any prior knowledge of the questions.)

People who missed the panel kept asking us afterwards who “won.” The journalists won, duh. Even if Klepek seemed to be playing for the other team occasionally.
