When it comes to survival gear, you can be pretty sure everything has been tested in a clinical, standardized setting to make sure performance is up to snuff before the products get real-world testing. For example, the National Institute of Justice has exacting standards when it comes to testing and certifying the bulletproof (bullet-resistant, actually) gear that protects officers on the street and soldiers overseas.
