Tron Legacy fans from around the world are being called to action Wednesday by a viral ad campaign.
An e-mail sent Tuesday night clued in participants about the event. Operatives are being asked to drop by 27 different locations in 25 cities around the world including London, Sydney, Los Angeles, New York and Madrid. Those who turn up at these spots, like Midtown Bowl in Atlanta (.pdf), will find a contact there, likely wearing a "Flynn Lives" T-shirt. That contact, when told a special password, will hand over a code that can be entered into the Flynn Lives website. The codes unlock images from the original Tron movie which, when clicked, appear to be revealing an image from the new movie.
Tron Legacy is the long-awaited sequel to Disney's groundbreaking 1982 film Tron. Jeff Bridges will return as Kevin Flynn, a videogame programmer who finds himself transported into the computer games he created. Tron Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski, will be released in 3-D Dec. 17.
Wednesday's event follows the big Tron Legacy reveal at Comic-Con International last year, where fans found a replica of Flynn's Arcade, saw a model of the new light-cycle from Tron Legacy and heard new music from the movie by Daft Punk.
In the weeks leading up to Wednesday's event, a handful of fans received bit models in the mail – replicas of the "neutral," "yes" and "no" bits that followed Jeff Bridges around in the original Tron movie.
This is all the work of 42 Entertainment – the folks responsible for the Halo "I Love Bees" campaign, the alternate-reality game that supplemented Nine Inch Nails' record Year Zero and the viral advertising for The Dark Knight. Those unlucky enough to be stuck in the office, or too far from one of the 25 cities to participate, can watch the viral event unfold at the Flynn Lives site.
Update: The scavenger hunt's Parisian winner blogged about the experience, providing photo documentation of her contact and the swag she won.
